Villa Darya

A Local Hotel in Hunza

Villa Darya is owned and run by a family from this valley. We live in Gojal through the winter as well as the season, and the people who meet you at the door are from Hunza rather than posted here for the summer.

That is worth saying plainly, because a search for a hotel in Hunza returns a great many results where it is not true.

What locally run actually changes

Not the thread count. What it changes is the quality of what you are told.

Ask at reception whether the road to the pass is clear, whether the blossom has reached Passu yet, whether a track is walkable this week, and the answer comes from someone who drove it, walked it, or heard from a cousin who did that morning. Conditions here move faster than any website reports them, and local knowledge is the only thing that keeps up.

It also means the money stays in the valley. The staff are from here, the produce is bought here, and what the hotel earns is largely spent here.

Traditional Hunza food, actually served

The kitchen cooks the valley's own food rather than a tourist approximation of it. Among what is on the menu:

  • Giyaling — the traditional Hunza griddle bread, served plain or with butter and Hunza apricot jam.
  • Hunza apricot jam, from the fruit this valley is known for.
  • The Heritage Buffet, built around local dishes rather than international ones.

There is Pakistani, Chinese and continental food too, because not every guest wants local food at every meal. But the traditional dishes are the ones we would point you at. See the current menus — they are the kitchen's live menus, not a brochure.

A hotel built here, on purpose

Villa Darya began in 2019, out of a straightforward idea: that a place like Upper Hunza deserves accommodation as considered as the landscape people come for, and that it ought to be built and run by the people who live in it.

The hotel stands in Shishkat, on the Karakoram Highway, 5 km from Attabad Lake — a location chosen by people who knew which part of this valley was worth standing in.
